Weekend in Hangzhou

Last weekend we made a quick two day trip to Hangzhou. I was helping run a Healthy Mothering class for some friends there on Saturday afternoon, and since it had been a loooong time since we had been to Hangzhou, we thought we'd make a fun weekend out of it. The girls got to have a fun afternoon at the hotel pool on Saturday while I was out for the class, then we spent Sunday morning out at the very famous West Lake. It is the topic of many chinese poems and tales...I'll be honest, though... the first time I went in 2000, it was raining, and this time we went it was nearly 100 degrees (at 9am!)...so I need to go on a nice, cool day to perhaps fully appreciate this place!
We did snap a few good photos...

This would probably not make our 'top 10 best family photos'...but in their defense, the girls were giving it their best shot at smiling in the sun and heat.

As soon as we finished this photo, we began walking up the path we were on and literally 30 seconds later Vera called me over to take this photo:

She informed us that this was a rock just like the one Ariel sat on in 'The Little Mermaid'.

Here are the girls with NaiNai and YeYe...at the boat docks on lake with a really cool looking restaurant in the background.

The favorite place at the lake that morning was the turtle pond. We bought some food and the girls enjoyed feeding the swarms of turtles.

Vera picked out this fan for her souvenir!

And Wendy was hungry so opted for this corn on the cob for hers...

Wouldn't have expected that to happen at the little souvenir kiosk! Both were perfectly happy with their treats, though!

Hangzhou is located just west of Shanghai, and we enjoyed taking one of China's many, new high-speed trains. Here we are waiting to board at the Hangzhou train station. This photo doesn't fully capture the chaos going on around us, but as you can see it was fairly crowded. They were selling standing tickets for the same price as the seats, so business must have been good that weekend!

Here we are by the train that brought us from Hangzhou to Shanghai, 169 kilometers, in 45 minutes. We loved it...it was really comfortable and so fast!
