College Entrance Exams in Shanghai

This past weekend, China held it's annual college entrance exam for seniors. It was 2 days of serious pressure for most only-child families in this country hoping to get their child into a good university. Unfortunately on both days Alex and I forgot to take our camera out with us...because the scenes we saw were pretty crazy. We were shocked to pass the high school near our house (along a VERY busy 4 lane road) and see quite possibly every parent of every high school senior waiting outside for their kid...all day. The police had two lanes on either side of the street blocked off for parents to have their cars parked. Can you imagine the pressure of taking an exam with your parents waiting for you outside the school...all day??? All the parents looked so nervous! There are a lot of things wrong with this picture...much of it relating to the one child policy and unhealthy pressures parents put on kids in this society. For now, I'll just include a few photos instead of our commentary... if you ever want to hear our opinions on these issues, feel free to ask :)...I just won't take up blog space with them!
